FRIDAY MORNING RADIO, Edition 462, 9.00 ~ Midday AEDT
The number 462 (or, pronounced 4-6-2) has a special significance to railway enthusiasts, so, for this edition I included a number of railway-related tracks.
Today’s photo, the Ross Bridge in the central north of Tasmania. It was built in the 1830s by convict labour and carried highway traffic between Hobart and northern Tasmania for over 140 years. Today, this bridge is as sturdy as when it was first opened in 1838 and it is the third-oldest bridge still in use in Australia.
The township of Ross was bypassed by the Midland Highway in the 1970s, but it remains a very attractive stop for visitors and locals alike.

1967 Huon Valley, Tasmania – Millions of apples, a substantial portion of the year’s crop, were being dumped in orchards to rot on the ground. Contributing causes were a decrease in demand for apples for juice, tougher inspection rules resulting in rejection of apples with minor skin blemishes, and smaller apple sizes caused by drought conditions..
