BORN

1933   Elsternwick, Victoria – Norman Yemm, actor, known for his appearances in The Sullivans, Homicide, Number 96, and Prisoner  He was also an opera singer, theatre performer and sportsman.  Died 2015.

1937  Los Angeles, California,  U.S.A. – Craig Breedlove, five-time world land speed record holder. He was the first to reach 400 mph (640 km/h), 500 mph (800 km/h), and 600 mph (970 km/h), using turbojet-powered vehicles.  Died 2023.

DIED

1964  Near Bellingen, New South Wales – Frank Partridge, Australia’s youngest World War 2 Victoria Cross winner, but more famous as a major winner in the popular television quiz programme Pick-A-Box.    (Car crash, Aged 39)  

EVENTS

1936  Sydney, New South Wales – The first Australian-owned oil company was established.  The Australian Motorists Petrol Company Limited also had exclusive rights for American made electric petrol pumps, the first to dispense petrol in the country.

1948 New Norfolk, Tasmania – The local peg factory, a major local industry, was destroyed by fire.

1954 Tasmania – The daily Tasman Limited express railmotor was introduced, running between Hobart, Western Junction and Burnie.  The railmotors were soon replaced by a diesel locomotive hauled consist, which continued the service until July 1978.

1965 America launched the first 2-person crew (Gus Grissom and John Young) into Earth Orbit in Gemini 3.

2001 The Russian Mir space station re-entered the atmosphere and broke into pieces which fell into the Pacific Ocean near Fiji.
