FRIDAY MORNING RADIO, Edition 461, 9.00 ~ Midday AEDT

The Massey-Ferguson tractor was a frequently-seen workhorse on farms around Tasmania, and interstate, from the early 1950s.  I had relatives on rural properties in the Huon Valley, and all had “Fergie” tractors.

Today’s photograph is of a train-load of brand-new “Fergies” heading to the north of the State around 1953, presumably after being offloaded from a ship in Hobart.

The train is being hauled by two X Class diesel-electric locomotives, themselves near-new.  The photo was taken in Claremont, then an outer suburb of Hobart, and the  identity of the photographer is unknown

21 MARCH IN HISTORY:

ON THIS DAY

1931   Australia’s first civil airline disaster occurred, when the Southern Cloud, one of 5 triple-engine Avro 618 aircraft which flew daily services for Australian National Airways, vanished after departing Sydney for Melbourne with six passengers and two crew. Despite an 18-day search involving over 20 aircraft,  no trace of the missing plane or it’s occupants was found.

Although the Southern Cloud’s fate remained a mystery, a Committee of Inquiry recommended that all passenger carrying aircraft should be fitted with two-way radios, and that ground stations should be established to monitor the progress of aircraft to their destinations.

Twenty seven years later, on 26 October 1958, a worker on the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Project  accidentally discovered the aircraft’s wreckage in mountainous terrain, 25 kilometres east of the direct Sydney-Melbourne route.

1957  The first Holden station wagon, based on the FE series sedans, went on sale

1962  Sandy Bay, Hobart – A swarm of European wasps held up work on a new road for two days, after a nest was disturbed by a bulldozer driver.

1968  Derwent Valley, Tasmania – A car narrowly escaped being buried in one of five landslides which occurred on the Lyell Highway between Granton and New Norfolk.
Other cars were trapped between landslides and the occupants had to wait until the road had been cleared.  Meanwhile, Dromedary Road was also temporarily cut by flood waters.
