1946  North-East Tasmania – An embankment weakened by flooding collapsed beneath a goods train hauling 20 trucks of coal and timber, 16 kms east of Avoca.  Train driver Eric Britton died instantly.

1964 Flooding caused rail and road traffic in Northern New South Wales to stop and hundreds of people to be isolated

1958 Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A. – The Ford Motor Company produced its 50 millionth car, a Thunderbird

1961 Bell Bay, Tasmania – The original jetty quietly gave way and collapsed into the Tamar River without warning, barely a week before it was scheduled to have been demolished.

1978 Brittany, France –  The supertanker Amoco Cadiz split into three sections after running aground on the Portsall Rocks, two kilometres from the coast.  It’s entire cargo of over 220,000 tonnes of crude oil was spilt into the sea.  Millions of fish, seabirds, and other species of marine life perished.
