24 JANUARY IN HISTORY:

BORN:

1884 Wagga Wagga, New South Wales – Sir Thomas Alfred Blamey, Australian Army General of the First and Second World Wars.  In 1945, he signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on behalf of Australia and, a few days later, accepted the Japanese surrender in Morotai.  Died 1951.

1917 Hamden, Connecticut, U.S.A. – Ernest Borgnine, actor of television and the big screen, whose career spanned nearly six decades.  On television, he is best remembered for his role as Quinton McHale in the 1962-66 sitcom McHales Navy.  Died 2012.

EVENTS:

1898 The North-East Dundas Railway, in western Tasmania, opened between Zeehan and Montezuma

1903  Kalgoorlie, WA received its first water supply from the Mundaring Weir with the completion of the 566 km pipeline.

1978  The Soviet satellite Cosmos 954, burned up as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere, scattering radioactive debris from its nuclear reactor over Canada’s Northwest Territories. Only 1% of the wreckage was recovered.

1986  The Voyager 2 spacecraft, which was launched by NASA in 1977 to explore the outer planets, made its closest approach, within 81,500 km, of Uranus. It transmitted thousands of photographs, and an immense amount of scientific data on the planet, its moons and the rings surrounding it.

Voyager 2 is still operating and communicating with the Deep Space Network on Earth from interstellar space, over 18 billion km away.  It is expected to continue transmitting for another few years, and is destined to wander the stars for eternity.
