5 JANUARY IN HISTORY:
EVENTS
1943 Albury, New South Wales – Police renewed an investigation into the unsolved “Pyjama Girl” murder of 1934, in which an unidentified body had been found in a culvert near Albury, after the victim was identified as Linda Agostini, a young lady who had been reported missing a week before the discovery.
Soon afterwards, the victim’s husband, Antonio Agostini was arrested and charged. He was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 6 years’ imprisonment, but released in 1948 and deported to Italy.
1975 Hobart, Tasmania – The bulk ore carrier MV Lake Illawarra struck the Tasman Bridge, resulting in the deaths of 7 crewmen and 5 motorists who were driving over the bridge at the time. This left the Bridgewater bridge as the only road crossing of the Derwent near Hobart.
2005 Palomar Observatory, California, U.S.A. – Eris, the largest known dwarf planet in the solar system, was discovered. Eris is approximately 2,500 kilometres in diameter, has one moon, named Dysnomia, and is currently about three times as far from the sun as Pluto.
