1822 Dole, France – Louis Pasteur, chemist and micro-biologist famed for developing vaccination and pasteurisation. His breakthroughs in the discovery of the causes of diseases and how to prevent them have saved countless lives since. Died 1895.
1879 Sandwich, Kent, England – Sydney Hughes Greenstreet BKA Sydney Greenstreet, English actor. Died 1954
1901 Schoneberg, Berlin, Germany – Magdalene von Losch, BKA Marlene Dietrich, actress and singer Died 1992
1941 Wallasey, Cheshire, England – Leslie Charles Maguire, pianist with the 1960s pop group, Gerry & the Pacemakers. Died 2023
1952 Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England – David Knopfler, singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist and co-founder of the rock band Dire Straits.
DIED:
1981 Rancho Mirage, California, U.S.A. – Hoagy Carmichael, American composer, pianist, singer, actor and bandleader. Of his many compositions, Stardust, The Nearness Of You, Georgia On My Mind, and Heart and Soul are amongst the most recorded American songs of all time. Aged 82
EVENTS:
1979 The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support a ruling pro-Soviet regime. Over the following nine years, a million civilians were killed, 90,000 Mujahideen rebels, 18,000 Afghan troops, and over 14,000 Soviet troops.
1996 Lone French yachtsman Raphael Dinelli was rescued from his sinking yacht in treacherous conditions 2,200 kilometres south of West Australia. Dinelli spent 36 hours in knee-deep water before being located by an RAAF Orion aircraft, which dropped a survival kit including an inflatable raft.
