BORN

1876  Maywood, Illinois, U.S.A. – Walter Burley Griffin, architect and landscape architect, best known for his role in designing the layout of Canberra.   He has also been credited with the development of the L-shaped house floor plan, the carport and the first use of reinforced concrete.  (d. 1937)

1941 Madras, India – Randolph Peter Best, the original drummer for the Beatles, replaced by Ringo Starr in 1962.  After working with a number of unsuccessful groups, he gave up music to work as a civil servant for 20 years, then started the Pete Best Band.  Turns 83

1942 Anderston, Glasgow, Scotland – Billy Connolly, comedian, musician, presenter and actor.  Originally employed as a welder in the local shipyards, he gave it up to pursue a career as a folk singer with the Humblebums, and subsequently as a soloist.  Turns 82

DIED

2019 Cambridge, England –  Vivian Leopold James BKA Clive James, expatriate Australian critic, broadcaster and poet.  Known for his English chat shows, he lived in England since 1962.  Aged 80

EVENTS

1917  Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A. – A bomb, which had been discovered next to a church and taken to the central police station by a social worker and a church janitor, exploded whilst being examined.  Nine police officers and a female civilian lost their lives.

1963  Dallas, Texas, U.S.A. – The alleged assassin of President John Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald, was murdered by nightclub owner Jack Ruby in the basement of the police headquarters.

1968  Hobart, Tasmania – The city’s last trolley bus service ended with the completion of the final service between Huon Road in South Hobart and the city.

1971  Between Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. – An unidentified man who called himself Dan Cooper parachuted from a plane he had hijacked, after collecting US$200,000 in ransom money.  He was never seen again and most of the money was never recovered.

Whilst it is thought that he didn’t survive the parachute jump, the case remains the only unsolved skyjacking in U.S. history.

1993  Liverpool, England – Two 11-year-old boys, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables were convicted of the torture and murder of 2-year-old James Bolger, and became the country’s youngest convicted murderers of the 20th century.
