EVENTS:

1755  Lisbon, Portugal – The city and surrounding areas were destroyed and over 50,000 lives were lost during a massive earthquake, followed by a tsunami and firestorm.  The earthquake was felt throughout Europe and North West Africa, and tsunamis also struck the Azores, Spain, Caribbean, southern England and Ireland.

1926  Melbourne, Victoria – General Motors opened a car assembly plant, which used bodies built by Holdens Motor Body Builders Ltd of Adelaide.

1951  Nevada, U.S.A. – 6,500 American soldiers were deliberately exposed to radiation from the “Desert Rock” atomic explosion, ostensibly for “training purposes.”  Exactly a year later, the U.S. successfully detonated the first large hydrogen bomb on the Eniwetok Atoll, in the Marshall Islands.

1954  Mangalore, Victoria – The first Vickers Viscount turbo-prop airliner purchased by Trans Australia Airlines was destroyed when it crashed during an attempt to take off, using only 3 of it’s four engines.  Three senior captains perished, but there were five survivors, including a 7 year old boy.
