1886 Weedon, Northamptonshire, England – Leo Gratten Carroll, alias Leo G Carroll, actor, known for his roles in Alfred Hitchcock movies and several television series.  Died 1972.

1941 Melbourne, Victoria – Helen Reddy, singer best known for her signature hit, I Am Woman.  Died 2020.

DIED:

1990  Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. – Roger Miller, singer, songwriter, musician and actor, best known for his novelty songs such as King Of The Road, Dang Me and England Swings. Aged 56.

2002  London, England – Richard Harris, actor, singer-songwriter and writer.  Aged 72.

EVENTS:

1925  Hobart, Tasmania – Eric Waterworth unveiled a mechanism which allowed several records to be played automatically.

1938  Dandenong Ranges, Victoria – Australia’s worst air disaster to that dateoccurred when an Australian National airways DC 2 aircraft, which was 40 kilometres off course, struck a mountainside, with the loss of 4 crew and 14 passengers.

1959  Sydney, New South Wales – The heaviest deluge in the city’s history to that date combined to cause death and destruction in the western suburbs.

1937  Darwin, Northern Territory – Jean Batten arrived in Darwin to set a new England to Australia flight record of 5 days, 18 hours and 15 minutes.

1962  Dandenong, Victoria – The one millionth Holden car, an EJ Premier model, rolled off the company’s production line.
