1959 Dublin, Ireland – Niamh Cusack, actress famed for her role as Doctor Kate Rowan in the TV drama series Heartbeat. Turns 65

DIED:

1994  Century City, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. – Burt Lancaster, actor named by the American Film Institute as 19th Greatest Male Star of All Time.  Aged 80.

2006 Bel Air, Los Angeles, California U.S.A. – Jane Wyatt, actress best known for her role as the mother on the early 60s television series Father Knows Best, and as Amanda Grayson, the human mother of Spock in the science fiction television series, Star Trek.  Aged 96.

EVENTS:

1944  World War 2: During the allied invasion of the Phillippines, the heavy cruiser HMAS Australia was severely damaged by aircraft piloted by three kamikaze pilots.  Twenty crew were lost, 54 were wounded.

1944  Cleveland, Ohio U.S.A. – Liquid natural gas leaking from storage tanks exploded, levelling 30 city blocks and killing 130.

1957  Hobart, Tasmania – Hobart had its hottest October day since 1944, with a maximum temperature of 82 F (28 C) and winds gusting to 50 mph (80 km/h).

1960  Hobart, Tasmania – The final regular electric tram in the city, No 128, ran on the 6.03 p.m. service from the city to the Moonah depot.  To mark the official changeover from electric trams to petrol buses, a final tram ran from the city to the Springfield terminus in Springfield Avenue, several days later.
