1869 Lithgow, New South Wales – The ZigZag Railway, on the western side of the Blue Mountains, was opened to provide rail access between Sydney and inland districts. The Zig Zag railway closed upon completion of the bypass in 1910.
In 1972 a volunteer group was established to re-lay the track on the Zig Zag railway, but difficulties in obtaining locomotives and rolling stock from the New South Wales railways led to a decision to use a gauge of 3ft 6ins, as used in Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia, to allow use of stock from those States.
