Photo: Arch which was salvaged from the A.M.P. building in Hobart when it was demolished in 1968 to make way for a new high-rise office block. It now stands in the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Hobart.

1926  Launceston, Tasmania – The worst floods in the Tamar River for 20 years were recorded.
1943  Rome, Italy – A new Government deposed that of Benito Mussolini, sided with the Allies, and declared war on Germany.
1972  A Uruguayan Air Force plane crashed in the remote Andes mountains near the Argentina / Chile border.  Of the 45 who survived the crash, only 16 lived long enough to be rescued on December 23rd.

1934 Chania, Crete – Nana Mouskouri, Greek singer confirmed to have sold between 200 and 300 million records worldwide in a 50-year career, making her one of the best-selling singers of all time.  Turns 90.
1941 Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A. – Paul Simon, singer, songwriter and actor whose career has spanned seven decades, partly as half of the 60s duo, Simon & Garfunkel.  Turns 83

DIED:

2001  Castlemaine, Victoria – Peter Doyle, pop singer who had several Top 40 hits in Australia during the 1960s before becoming a member of the New Seekers in the early ‘70s.  He resumed his solo career in 1973.   Aged 52.
2010 Springfield, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. –  Alfred Cini BKA Al Martino, singer and actor best known for his record releases during the 1950s 60s and 70s.  Aged 82
