1906  San Francisco, California, U.S.A. – The public school board sparked a diplomatic crisis between the United States and Japan by ordering Japanese students to be taught in racially segregated schools 

1940  Australia – Wartime civilian petrol rationing was introduced..  

1954  Hobart, Tasmania  –  A report on the construction of a tunnel beneath the Derwent River, calculated to cost £3 million was submitted to the Hobart City Council by its Works Committee.  The report was then forwarded to the State Government for its consideration.
At the same time, the first section of the Brooker Highway, from Risdon Rd to Derwent Park Rd,  was officially opened by Governor Sir Ronald Cross.

1958 Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S.A. – NASA launched the lunar probe Pioneer 1, which failed to leave Earth and was destroyed when it re-entered the atmosphere.

1982 Near Portsmouth, England – A surviving portion of the Mary Rose, a Tudor gunship which sank in 1545, was raised from the sea bed in the Solent Channel.  It, and thousands of artifacts also recovered, are effectively a time capsule of the era.

1943 – St Austell, Cornwall England – John Nettles, actor best known for his lead roles in the television dramas Bergerac and Midsomer Murders.  Turns 81.

1957 – Anglesey, Wales – Dawn French, comedian, actress and screenwriter well known for her lead role as Geraldine Granger in the TV sitcom The Vicar of Dibley.  Turns 67

DIED:

1935 – Brisbane, Queensland – Arthur Hoey Davis alias Steele Rudd, Australian author famed for writing Austrralian publications such as On Our Selection, which was serialised and broadcast by radio stations throughout Australia.  (Aged 66)

1963 – Plascassier, France – Édith Giovanna Gassion alias Edith Piaf, singer, actress and cultural icon regarded as France’s greatest popular singer   (Aged 47)

2008 – Buckley, North Wales – Ronald Hulme BKA Russ Hamilton, first Liverpool pop singer to hit the United States music scene with his song Rainbow. (Aged 76)
