1883  The first run of the Orient Express express train took place, between Paris and Istanbul, as an ordinary international railway service, but it become renowned for romance and luxury travel.  The Orient Express name was applied to many trains running a variety of European routes, but it eventually evolved into a Strasbourg-Vienna overnight train, which last ran in December 2009.

1918  Sayreville, New Jersey, U.S.A. – A series of fires and explosions destroyed an ammunition plant over three days, killed more than 100, forced massive evacuations and spread ordnance over a wide area, pieces of which are still being found.

1952 Britain’s first nuclear bomb was exploded on the Monte Bello Islands, off the West Australian coast.

1957  Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, was launched by the Soviet Union.

1967 Hobart, Tasmania – The Hydro-Electric Commission purchased a former vehicular ferry from New Zealand, Hinemoa, for use as a temporary floating power station to alleviate a power shortage caused by a drought in the central highlands.

1976 England – The Intercity 125 High Speed Train  was introduced.  With a regular service speed of 201 km/h, it is the fastest diesel-powered train in regular service in the world

1985 Cape Canaveral, Florida, U.S.A. – The Space Shuttle Atlantis was launched on its maiden flight.  During it’s 25 year life, Atlantis was launched on 33 missions, orbited Earth 4,848 times, and travelled 202,673,974 kilometres.  It is now displayed in Florida’s Kennedy Space Visitor Centre.

1990 Germany was re-unified when the German Democratic Republic ceased to exist and its territory became part of the Federal Republic of Germany
