29 SEPTEMBER IN HISTORY:
1957 Tasmania plunged into a late winter with heavy snowfalls and well-below average temperatures, Hobart recording a top of 8 C. Meanwhile, in New South Wales, bushfires, fanned by high winds, threatened properties.
1959 Devonport , Tasmania – The Bass Strait ferry Taroona made its final departure from Devonport to Melbourne, following the arrival of the new roll-on, roll-off Princess of Tasmania. She was subsequently sold to a Greek shipping line, renamed ss Hellas, and used as a Mediterranean cruise ship. It was laid up in 1966 and never used again. In 1989 she was towed to Turkey, where she was scrapped.
1963 Bellerive, Tasmania – Only a few millimetres of planking saved a 58 year old ferry, the Derwent, from sinking at its moorings after a hole was bored through its hull from inside, with a brace and bit. A strong jet of water, which shot into the vessel when the tip of the drill pierced its side, forced the culprit away and prevented the full width of the 2 inch drill from passing through the hull.
