27 SEPTEMBER IN HISTORY:

1825  County Durham, England – The Stockton and Darlington Railway opened, principally to carry coal to ports at Stockton-on-Tees, and at Darlington.  Passengers were carried in horse-drawn carriages until locomotives were used for this purpose in 1833, initiating the world’s first steam hauled passenger trains.

1854  Off Cape Race, Newfoundland – In the first great maritime disaster in the Atlantic Ocean, nearly 400 lives were lost when the steamship SS Arctic sank after colliding with a French steamer, SS Vesta, in foggy conditions.

* 1903  Danville, Virginia, U.S.A. – A Southern Railway train known as the Fast Mail, which was en route from Monroe, Virginia to Spencer, North Carolina was wrecked when it derailed on a high bridge. The wreck inspired the famous railroad ballad, The Wreck Of The Old 97
