20 SEPTEMBER IN HISTORY:
1893 Near Brighton, Tasmania – The evening express train from Launceston to Hobart was deliberately derailed on the tall Horseshoe Bridge, which stood between Brighton Junction and Bridgewater Junction.
1906 Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England – The Cunard Line’s RMS Mauretania was launched. She was the world’s largest ship until 1910, and for 20 years held the record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. She was withdrawn from service in September 1034 and sent to shipbreakers in Rosyth, Scotland, in July 1935.
1955 Hobart, Tasmania – A Melbourne contracting company prepared for construction of the longest, pre-stressed concrete bridge in Australia at the time, which was intended to replace a timber bridge on the Sorell causeway. This bridge was replaced, in turn, in 2002 by the current McGee Bridge.
1963 Canberra, Australian Capital Territory – The Federal Minister for the Interior, Mr Freeth, closed the valves of a £1.4 million, 25 metre high dam to impound the waters of the Molonglo River, to create Lake Burley Griffin.
