15 SEPTEMBER IN HISTORY:
1830 Lancashire, England – The Liverpool to Manchester railway opened. This was the world’s first inter-city passenger railway, in which all trains were timetabled and hauled for most of the distance by steam locomotives.
William Huskisson, English Member of Parliament and financier, became the first recorded railway passenger fatality when he was struck by the Stephenson locomotive Rocket, after he disobeyed instructions to remain aboard the train he was travelling in.
1907 Murwillumbah, New South Wales – A massive fire destroyed over 60 of the mainly-wooden buildings in the town, which housed most of the town’s businesses. The town had no water supply and no fire brigade.
1916 France – World War 1 – Tanks were used for the first time in combat, by the British Army, at the Battle of the Somme.
1957 Interlaken, Tasmania – Fifty people were stranded by heavy snow drifts, which trapped 14 vehicles for two days. A further 30 people were similarly stranded in the Arthurs Lake area.
1964 Melbourne, Victoria – 15,000 turned out in a demonstration to protest against Premier Bolte’s plan to introduce a State Income Tax.
