# 1933 Friars Point, Mississippi, U.S.A. – Harold Lloyd Jenkins, alias Conway Twitty, country singer who also had success in early rock and roll, rhythm and blues and pop music. He held the record for the most number one singles, with 55 No. 1 Billboard country hits until George Strait broke the record in 2006. (d. 1993)
## 1942 Gastonia, North Carolina, U.S.A. – Diane Ray, pop singer of the early 1960s, best known for her one-hit-wonder of 1963, Please Don’t Talk To The Lifeguard. (d. 2020)
### 1946 Douglas, Isle of Man – Barry Gibb, musician, singer, songwriter, and producer, famed as a member of the Bee Gees, one of the most successful pop groups in history. The Bee Gees was comprised of Barry Gibb and his younger, twin brothers Robin and Maurice. Barry is the sole survivor of the three. Turns 78.

1929 Hobart recorded a record low September maximum temperature of 3.8 C.
1934 Albury, New South Wales – Mystery surrounded the discovery of the charred body of an attractive blonde woman, wearing silk pyjamas, in a roadside culvert. The young woman became known throughout Australia as “The Pyjama Girl,” as ten years elapsed before she was identified as Linda Agostini. The case remained unsolved until her husband, Tony Agostini, confessed. Tony Agostini was convicted of manslaughter, served four years of a six year sentence, and was deported to Italy in 1948.
1939 Nazi Germany invaded Poland, beginning the Second World War.
1948 Melbourne, Victoria – The first production Holden car left the assembly line at Fisherman’s Bend.
1972 Australia – Changed from measuring temperature in the Fahrenheit scale, to Celsius.
1983 Near Sakhalin Island, Russia – All 269 aboard a Boeing 747 of Korean Airlines, Flight 007, perished when the plane was shot down by a Soviet jet fighter, after the commercial aircraft entered Soviet airspace.
