1955 – Sydney, New South Wales – A drama in the sky began when a pilot casually swung the propeller of an Auster light plane as he walked past, at Bankstown aerodrome. The engine fired, and the plane took off, pilotless. It climbed to an altitude of 1,000 feet and flew aimlessly for 3 hours over the city, but was eventually shot down by two RAAF fighter planes when it headed towards the sea off Broken Bay.
1957 DIED, Fiji – Harold Gatty, Tasmanian-born navigator, inventor, and aviation pioneer nominated by Charles Lindbergh as the “Prince of Navigators.” In 1931, Gatty served as navigator, along with pilot Wiley Post, on a flight which set a record for aerial circumnavigation of the world, flying a distance of 24,903 km in a Lockheed Vega named Winnie Mae, in 8 days, 15 hours, and 51 minutes.
1961 Chamonix, France – 63 tourists were rescued from a stranded cable car after a low-flying jet aircraft sliced through the supporting cable, causing another cable car to plunge to the ground, killing 6.
