ON THIS DAY:
1903 Hanover, Germany – Engineer Karl Jatho made a 60 metre flight in a self-made, motored aeroplane 1 month before the first flight of the Wright Brothers. This has never been officially recognised, as it wasn’t legally certified for more than 30 years.
1917 Thessaloniki, Greece – A massive fire destroyed 32% of the city and left 70,000 homeless.
1964 Hobart, Tasmania – The floating Hobart bridge was dismantled and towed to a mooring in Geilston Bay, following the opening to traffic of the Tasman Bridge. The British ship Galway became the first vessel to motor through the navigation span of the Tasman Bridge
1966 Near Long Tan, Vietnam – 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation for four hours, in torrential rain. Eighteen Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded. After the battle the bodies of 245 enemy soldiers were found, and there was evidence that many more had been carried away.
DIED 1977 King William’s Town, South Africa – World attention was focussed on South Africa’s apartheid policies after activist Steve Biko died of injuries sustained whilst in custody after being arrested at a roadblock.
VIGILANT – A series of odd events carried by The Mercury newspaper, decades ago:
1956 – A joke misfired on a B B C radio announcer, who was reading a news bulletin on a short-wave service. Describing a meeting in Cyprus (a trouble spot of the day) between Lord Radcliffe and the Mayor of Nicosia, the announcer said that “no politics were discussed at the meeting.”
The announcer probably forgot to press the cut-out button before he added, “In other words, it was a dead loss.”
1960 – An enthusiastic New Norfolk car salesman climbed into the boot of a new model car, to prove it was larger than that of another popular make. The lid closed. Then it was discovered that the key, which was required to open the boot lid – from the outside – was still in his pocket.
1968 – A young person driving along Sandy Bay Road was doing the right thing, having his passenger wearing a seat belt. The passenger was a skeleton.
