BORN 1897 East Dulwich, London, England – Enid Blyton, one of the most successful children’s storytellers of the twentieth century, noted for numerous series of books based on recurring characters and designed for different age groups. Her books were highly successful in many parts of the world, having sold over 600 million copies. Died 1968
BORN 1913 Marseilles, France – Frank Pourcel, Award-winning French composer and orchestra leader for popular and classical music. Died 2000
DIED 1939 Duppigheim, France – Gianoberto Maria Carlo Bugatti alias Jean Bugatti, car designer, test engineer and son of Ettore Bugatti, founder of the Bugatti car manufacturing company. Bugatti cars were high powered, technically advanced vehicles for their day. Jean Bugatti was testing a vehicle he had designed, when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree after avoiding a drunken cyclist who had accessed the race track through a hole in a perimeter fence. Aged 30
DIED 1989 Neutral Bay, Sydney, New South Wales – John Meillon, Australian actor best known for his role as Walter Reilly in the Crocodile Dundee films, and also as working class battler Wally Stiller in the TV sit-com My Name’s McGooley, What’s Yours. He also voiced Victoria Bitter beer commercials until his death. He was aged 55
DIED 2016 Nashville, Tennessee, U.S.A. – Glenn Yarborough, folk singer and lead singer with the Limelighters from 1959 till 1963. He then had a successful solo career, and is remembered for his 1965 hit, The Honey Wind Blows. Aged 86
