1945 Nagasaki, Japan – 39,000 people died instantly when the U.S. B 29 aircraft Bockscar dropped the atomic bomb Fat Man over the city.
1961 Sydney, New South Wales – Australia’s last coastal passenger liner, Manoora, arrived at the end of her final Australian voyage. The ship returned to civilian use in 1949 following a major refit. After her final Australian voyage in 1961, she was sold to an Indonesian company and renamed Ambulombo. She sank off Luzon in 1972, whilst being towed to a ship breakers yard.
1966 Hobart, Tasmania – Controversy erupted after the sudden enforcement of the 58-year-old Sunday Observance Act which required driving schools, entertainment establishments, Laundromats and other commercial businesses to cease operating on Sundays.
