Born 1901 New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A. – Louis Armstrong, jazz trumpeter, composer, singer and actor, one of the most influential jazz personalities, whose career spanned 50 years from the 1920s. Died 1971.
Born 1923 Sydney, New South Wales – Reginald Roy Grundy, pioneering Australian entrepreneur and media mogul, creator of many popular television programmes including Wheel of Fortune, Neighbours, Prisoner, and Sons and Daughters. Died 2016.
Born 1926 Manley, New South Wales – Maurice Fields, Australian comedian and actor, known for his appearances in Australian television series, Bellbird, The Box, Prisoner, The Flying Doctors and Hey Hey It’s Saturday. Died 1995.
EVENTS THIS DAY:
1914 London, England – The United Kingdom declared war on Germany, following Germany’s invasion of Belgium. Australia consequently entered World War 1, while the United States declared neutrality
1944 Amsterdam, Holland – A tip from an informer led the Gestapo to a sealed-off room in a warehouse where they found and arrested Jewish diarist, Anne Frank and her family.
1953 Victoria – Australia’s first jet fighter aircraft, the Sabre, underwent its first test flight. The plane was a modified version of the original American model
1966 Hobart, Tasmania – Driving schools, a model slot-car racing venue and a Jazz Club were threatened with prosecution under the 58 year old Sunday Observance Act which was being brought to bear on all businesses which traded on Sundays. The Premier (Mr Reece) later refused to declare an amnesty for any business which failed to comply.
