Born this day 1912 in Okemah, Oklahoma, U.S.A. – Woodrow Wilson Guthrie alias Woody Guthrie, singer-songwriter and folk musician, whose legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children’s songs and ballads. Died 1967.
Born this day 1944 in Waverley, New South Wales – Margaret Anne Jones-Owen, alias Margaret Pomeranz, Australian film producer and critic, and television personality.
Born this day 1946 in Melbourne, Victoria – John Wood, Gold Logie Award-winning Australian actor, best known today for his recent role as businessman Patrick Tyneman in the ABC drama The Doctor Blake Mysteries.
EVENTS:
1902 Venice, Italy – The original Campanile, or bell tower, of St Mark’s Basilica, then one of the oldest towers in Italy, collapsed. It dated to the year 902, and was 98 metres high. It was rebuilt to a similar design in 1912.
1945 Charlotte Pass, New South Wales – Recorded the lowest temperature in Australia at the time, of -22.2 C (-8 F). This record was broken in the same place on 29th June 1994, when a new low of -23.0 (-9.4 F) was recorded.
1965 The U.S. spacecraft Mariner 4 became the first spacecraft to return images from another planet as it approached and flew past Mars. The photographs it transmitted, of an apparently dead world caused a change of thinking by scientists as to life on Mars. Communications with Mariner 4 were terminated in December 1967 and the space craft is now derelict, in orbit around the Sun.
