ON THIS DAY:
EVENTS ON THIS DAY:
1952 The liner SS United States passed Bishop’s Rock, at the westernmost tip of the Scilly Isles, during her maiden voyage from New York, breaking the trans-Atlantic speed record with a time of 3 days, 10 hours, 42 minutes, to take the record as the fastest passenger ship in the world. SS United States has bene laid up in Philadelphia, in a stripped condition, for many years, her future remains uncertain.
1960 Sydney, New South Wales β In one of Australia’s most infamous crimes, 8-year-old Graeme Thorne was kidnapped and held for ransom after his father won Β£100,000 in a lottery. Graeme’s body was found, hidden on vacant ground in the suburb of Seaforth, six weeks later.
A massive police investigation, which used pioneering forensic techniques, culminated three months later in Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) of a Hungarian immigrant to Australia, Istvan Baranjay, alias Stephen Bradley.
Baranjay was aboard a ship bound for England with his own wife and three children. He was extradited to Sydney and sentenced to life imprisonment in Goulburn gaol, where he died in 1968.
ODD SPOTS:
1968 β A New Norfolk man called at the local police station to pay the registration on his car. He glanced through the police station window, in time to see his car moving off – driverless. He ran out and chased it, but the car came first – through a police officer’s front fence!
1968 β Toronto, Canada – A young woman, who was fleeing on a bicycle after making an unsuccessful attempt to rob a bank, was also unsuccessful with her escape bid. She was arrested after her bicycle skidded on a piece of watermelon rind..
1968 β Vareza Dal Parma, Brazil β Vincente Pinto, who claimed to be 113 years of age, had a remarkably eventful life. The latest occurred in a power station when he received a 13,000 volt shock, which knocked him out.
He had allegedly survived four rattle snake bites; numerous falls from horses; several bull gorings; and a number of severe burns.
