1886 Montreal, Canada – The first transcontinental train trip across the country departed.  Operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway, it arrived in Port Moody, British Columbia on July 4.

1894 London, England  – Tower Bridge was officially opened by the-then Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII.  It’s total construction cost was £1,184,000, or a little over £100 million in today’s values.  Each of its two opening bascules, or roadway sections, weigh over 1,000 tonnes.

1927 Sydney, New South Wales – Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm completed a record-breaking circumnavigation flight around Australia in 10 days, 5 hours and 15 minutes.  Their 7 year old plane had an open cockpit, rudimentary navigation aids and therefore could be flown only in daylight.

1940 Sydney, New South Wales – The flying boat Aotearoa arrived from Auckland carrying nine passengers and 40,000 letters, making the first such flight for Tasman Empire Airways Ltd.  The flight had taken nearly nine hours.

1947 New Town, Tasmania – A bulldozer turned the first soil for construction of the first stage of a new northern outlet road from Cornelian Bay Road to Berriedale. (Stage 1 of the Brooker Highway.)

1947 Masterton, New Zealand – The country faced the worst flooding for 50 years after 10 inches (254mm) of rain fell in 24 hours in the Wairarapa district.  Heavy damage was caused to highways and bridges, while the main trunk railway was inundated, halting Wellington – Auckland train services.

1960 Moonah, Tasmania – Prompt action by staff at the Bowen Road Primary School saved the lives of several children who had swallowed morphine sulphate tablets.  They were rushed to hospital by the headmaster, Mr Groom, in his own car and treated in the outpatients section.  

1965 Woodmans Point, near Fremantle, West Australia – The 10-man crew of a 320 ton explosives carrier, Blythe Star, abandoned the ship after it ran aground in heavy seas.  Authorities did not consider the ship, which was laden with 12,000 tons of gelignite and other explosives, was in danger of exploding.

1968 – Fergus Falls, Minnesota, U.S.A. – When a railway waggon containing powdered dog food arrived at a concrete mixing plant, it was unloaded and transferred to the mixing machinery. The mistake wasn’t discovered until the mix was used in a footpath, and didn’t harden.

1968 – Port Moresby, New Guinea – A local villager was walking to his home in Madang when a cow started to chase him. When he ran into a copra drying shed, the cow followed.
He jumped into a nearby river, and the cow followed. He gave the cow “the slip” by squeezing between two boulders – then discovered he was stuck. He spent the night calling for help before his son rescued him.

1968 – Hobart, Tasmania. – A motorist’s view of parking meter attendants changed when one said he was “sorry” he had to book him. The motorist went to the Town Hall with haste, to pay his dollar fine.
