1931 Roosevelt Field, Long Island, U.S.A. – Wiley Post and Tasmanian Harold Gatty took off in a single engine plane in an attempt to circumnavigate the world. Their flight set a record for aerial circumnavigation, covering 24,903 km in 8 days, 15 hours, and 51 minutes.
1942 Wales, U.K. – One of Germany’s latest fighter aircraft, a Focke-Wulf FW-190, was captured intact when it’s pilot mistakenly landed at RAF Pembrey.
ODD SPOTS:
1968 – London, England – England’s only female High Court Judge, Justice Elizabeth Lane, gave a decree nisi in the Divorce Court to John Deane (58), a carpenter, whose wife (Florence) attacked him each time he returned from the local pub.
Justice Lane said men should be able to stop for a few beers after work. She said the wife’s conduct was cruel and Mr Deane was unable to lead a peaceful life.
1968 – Chester, England – The local council ordered restaurant owner Bill White to remove a sign “White’s Eat Inn” because it was racist. Mr White said he wasn’t going to change his name.
1968 – Los Angeles, U.S.A. – Fourteen year old Craig Elliott got out of his bunk in his parent’s camper, and wandered out the door, while the camper was moving at 80 km/h! A highway patrol car, which happened to be behind, took Craig to hospital, but his injuries were limited to bruises. Craig’s mother said he had been sleep-walking since the age of three.
