1890 Ulverston, Lancashire, England – Arthur Stanley Jefferson alias Stan Laurel, comic actor, writer and film director, famous as half of the comedy double-act Laurel and Hardy. His career started during the silent film of the early 20th century and extended after World War II. Died 1965.
1915 Highgate, London, England – Dennis Anthony John Sharp, BKA Anthony Sharp, stage, movie and television actor, frequently cast as an aristocrat, appearing in productions such as The Flockton Flyer, Upstairs Downstairs, Man About The House, George and Mildred and To The Manor Born. Died 1984.

1963 Baikonur, Kazakhstan – The Soviet Union launched the first woman to enter space, Valentina Tereshkova, into Earth orbit aboard Vostok 6 The mission lasted almost three days, completing 48 orbits. +
1967 Melbourne, Victoria – Toyota Australia announced the introduction to Australia of a new small car, the Toyota Corolla. The car was described as a two-door, four seater with Italian styling, having an 1100 cc motor and a four-speed all-synchromesh manual transmission. Although it did not have a radio or heater as standard equipment, it was stated that there was enough interior room for four tall Australians.

1883 A railway connection was made between Albury, New South Wales, and Wodonga, Victoria, completing the Sydney to Melbourne rail link.
1887 South Australia was linked to New South Wales with the opening of a railway between Port Pirie and the New South Wales border town of Cockburn
1893 Kalgoorlie, West Australia – Paddy Hannan discovered gold and, in the ensuing gold rush, over 700 men were prospecting in the area three days later
1919 John Alcock Brown and Arthur Whitten Brown departed St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada on the first non-stop trans-Atlantic in a modified World War I Vickers Vimy bomber. They flew for 15 hours 57 minutes at an average speed of 185 km/h at altitudes varying between sea level and 3,700 m (12,000 ft) before crash-landing near Clifden, County Galway, Ireland.
Their aircraft, which was rebuilt by the Vickers Company is displayed in the London Science Museum in South Kensington, London.
1962 Sydney, New South Wales – A QANTAS Boeing 707 airliner named City of Sydney landed after the longest non-stop flight by an Australian commercial aircraft, having flown from Singapore in 9 hours 33 minutes.
1969 Wiley Park, Sydney, New South Wales – A fire partially destroyed the Roselands shopping centre, then the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere. The $2 million blaze was first noticed by police on road patrol in a helicopter.
