EVENTS ON THIS DAY:
1962 – Weybridge, Surrey, England – A new airliner, the Vickers VC 10, made its first test flight. This was the first clean-wing airliner with four engines mounted beside the tail and it later set the record for an Atlantic crossing by a sub-sonic airliner, of 5 hours and 1 minute. This record was held for 41 years, until a Boeing 747 shaved 5 minutes off with the help of a storm in 2020.
1965 – The Soviet spacecraft Luna 5 crashed on the Moon. Following a mid-course correction, a gyroscope problem caused the spacecraft to start spinning and a loss of control which result in the crash. An observatory on Earth noted a large dust cloud at the impact site which lasted ten minutes.
