EVENTS ON THIS DAY:
1947 – Camp Mountain, Queensland – A major train derailment resulted in the loss of 16 lives. A subsequent inquiry in Brisbane resolved that the crash was due to excessive speed and the crew was found guilty of dereliction of duty.
1955 – West Germany became a sovereign state and a few days later joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
1960 – The first test transmissions were made by the ABC’s Hobart television station, ABT 2. Reception was described as good throughout the State.
1966 – New Norfolk, Tasmania – Fire damaged the Corumbene nursing home, causing up to $8,000 damage. The building, which was the former New Norfolk Cottage Hospital, had been donated by the State Government and subject to years of work by local soroptimists, Rotarians, Apexians and other volunteers.
1972 – Near Richmond, Tasmania – The radio monitoring station at Quoin Ridge was established.

She appeared in many other movies until 2005. (Turns 88)

1961 Hobart, Tasmania – The new model EK Holden cars were released for sale in Tasmania; the first Holdens to feature automatic transmission.
1966 Clovelly, Sydney, New South Wales – A 9 year old schoolboy with a broken collarbone leapt into his mother’s runaway car as it rolled down a steep hill with his 4 year old sister at the wheel. The schoolboy steered the car past 4 parked vehicles, braked and steered towards the kerb just before it would have crashed into a double decker bus.
1967 Hobart, Tasmania – A fire which broke out on the 4th floor of a building in Argyle St threatened to engulf the entire city block.
