1854 – Australia’s first telegraph line opened between Melbourne and Williamstown. Work was already in progress on an extension to Geelong and Port Phillip Heads.
1911 – Palmerston, Northern Territory, was re-named Darwin after the evolutionist, Charles Darwin.
1911 – BORN Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.A. – Harlean Harlow Carpenter alias Jean Harlow, film actress and sex symbol of the 1930s. Known as the “Platinum Blonde” and the “Blonde Bombshell” due to her platinum blonde hair, Harlow was ranked as one of the greatest movie stars of all time by the American Film Institute. (d. 1937)
1947 – Western Junction, Tasmania – An RAAF Mosquito aircraft participating in an aerial pageant over-ran the airport runway, ploughed through two fences and hopped a railway cutting before coming to rest.
1960 Hobart, Tasmania – The State’s first television signal was transmitted by TVT channel 6 from the station’s newly completed building on Mt Wellington. The transmission consisted of a static test pattern in the form of a grid.

1910 – King County, Washington, USA – The worst avalanche in United States history buried a great Northern Railway train, with the loss of 96 lives
1932 – East Amwell, New Jersey, USA – Charles Lindburgh III, the infant son of aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh, was kidnapped from his family home. The child’s body was located two months later and, two years later, Bruno Hauptmann was arrested and charged. He was executed by electric chair in 1936, proclaiming his innocence.
1954 – Adelaide, South Australia, was rocked by a severe earthquake which caused extensive damage.
1957 – Hobart, Tasmania – During an exhibition on fire safety at the Hobart City Hall, fire broke out in the rear of the building.
1964 – Sydney, New South Wales – Three North Shore schools banned beatle-related clothing, haircuts and records – AND banned pupils from singing Beatles songs around the school – and whilst on the way to and from school!
Meanwhile, in the city, two butcher’s assistants donned Beatles wigs for a joke – and increased their employer’s takings substantially.
