1864 – Launceston, Tasmania – Kings Bridge, which spans the Cataract Gorge to link Trevallyn and the West Tamar with the city, was opened.
1892 – The Strahan – Zeehan railway opened, to provide an essential link between the Queenstown-Strahan Abt railway and the Emu Bay Railway which connected Zeehan with Burnie, on the north coast. The Strahan – Zeehan railway closed in 1960, and part of it’s formation was eventually used for construction of a new road.
1972 – The U.S. space probe Mariner 9 became the first human-made object to enter orbit around another planet, and transmitted some of the earliest close-up photographs of the planet Mars. It’s last contact with Earth was on 27 October 1972, when it was abandoned. The spacecraft was due to enter the Martian atmosphere and crash in 2020.
Born On 4 February:
1906 – Streator, Illinois, U.S.A. – Clyde Tombaugh, astronomer best known for discovering the dwarf planet Pluto in 1930, and many asteroids. He also called for serious scientific research of unidentified flying objects. Some of his ashes are aboard the New Horizons spacecraft, which was launched in 2006 to flyby Pluto. Died 1997.

1964 – The American space probe Ranger 6 crashed into the moon as planned, but it’s six television cameras failed to send any photographs of the lunar surface.

1927 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. – Stan Getz, jazz saxophone player, known as “The Sound” because of his warm, lyrical tone. Died 1991.
1944 – Wallasey, Cheshire, England – Geoffrey Hughes, actor best known as Onslow in the television sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, and as Vernon Scripps in the drama series Heartbeat. Died 2012.
1947 – Corpus Christi, Texas, U.S.A. – Ferrah Leni Fawcett alias Farrah Fawcett, actress, artist and multiple Golden Globe and Emmy award nominee, who rose to international fame when she appeared as private investigator Jill Munroe in the first season of the TV series Charlie’s Angels, in 1976. Died 2009.
1956 – London, England – Philip Franks, best known as Charlie in the TV series The Darling Buds of May, and as Sergeant Raymond Craddock in the drama series Heartbeat. Turns 68.
1963 – Liverpool, England – Stephen McGann, actor best known for his role as Dr Patrick Turner in the BBC drama series Call The Midwife. Turns 61.

1969 – Midhurst, Sussex, England – Boris Karloff, actor who starred as Frankenstein’s monster in the Frankenstein film series. Karloff is best remembered for his roles in horror films, and for his portrayal of Frankenstein’s monster in Frankenstein (1931), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), and Son of Frankenstein (1939). Aged 81.
1987 – Munich, Germany – Alistair MacLean, novelist who wrote successful thrillers, the best known of which are The Guns of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare, both having been made into successful films. He also wrote two novels under the pseudonym Ian Stuart. Aged 64.
1996 – Beverley Hills, California, U.S.A. – Eugene Curran Kelly alias Gene Kelly, dancer, actor, singer, film director and producer, and choreographer, who was a major exponent of 20th century filmed dance. Kelly was known for his energetic dancing style, his good looks and the likeable characters which he played on screen. Aged 83.
