1896 England – Walter Arnold of East Peckham, Kent became the first person recorded to be convicted of speeding. He was fined 1 shilling, plus costs, for speeding at 8 mph (13 km/h), thus exceeding the speed limit of 2 mph (3.2 km/h).
1938 Germany – The World Land Speed Record on a public road was broken by Rudolf Caracciola in a Mercedes Benz W195 on the Reichs-Autobahn A5, when he reached a speed of 432.7 kilometres per hour (268.9 mph).
1955 Hobart, Tasmania – Police were seeking public help to trace a utility which had crashed into a house in Tregear Street, Derwent Park. Although the utility knocked a hole in the wall of the house, two young boys whose beds were sent skidding across the floor inside, slept through the incident and were uninjured. Their father, Mr Kenneth Evans, also knew nothing of the crash until he went outside to collect his newspaper at 6.30 a.m.
