On This Day, 1964: Mt Kosciusko, New South Wales – 21 people were trapped in mid-air and two empty chairs plunged 10 metres to the ground when a chairlift cable dislodged from its tower. The stranded people were eventually rescued with a rope which was fired over the cable with a spear-gun.
1968: Near Port Hedland, West Australia – In Australia’s third-worst civil aviation disaster, a Viscount airliner of MacRobertson Miller Airlines crashed with the loss of all 26 aboard.
1991: Moscow, Russia – The former Soviet Union was officially dissolved.
