On This Day
1869 Egypt β The Suez Canal, linking the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea, was opened.
Co-incidentally, in 1913 in Panama, the first ship, a steamship named Louise, passed through the Panama Canal.
And in 1970,
The Soviet Union landed Lunokhod 1 on the Moonβs Mare Imbrium (Sea of Rains) from the orbiting Luna 17 spacecraft. This was the first roving remote-controlled robot to land on another world.
Resembling a toilet pan on eight independently operated wheels, Lunokhod 1 was fitted with a variety of scientific equipment. It travelled over 10Β½ kilometres on the Moon at a top speed of 100 metres an hour, with itβs four television cameras returning over 20,000 images and 206 high-resolution panoramas.
Lunokhod 1 operated for 11 months, instead of the planned three months. Contact was lost on 14 September 1971 and attempts to re-establish contact ceased on 4 October 1971.
